News Update On Intel Survey : Almost Half Of Indian Children Trust Strangers On The Web

Over 50 percent Indian children admit to meeting or wanting to meet a stranger they first met online, a new study by US-based Intel Security Group showed.

The study, named Teens, Tweens and Technology Survey, examines online behaviours and social networking habits of tweens and teens aged eight to 16 years.

The study also surveyed the concerns of parents, revealing that when it comes to online activity, 48 percent parents believe that the worst thing to happen to their children is interacting with strangers online.

"This concern is warranted given that 44 percent children polled would meet or have met someone in person that they first met online," the study said.

"As with every edition of our Teens, Tweens and Technology survey, this year too, we see some concerning issues being raised. In analysing the responses of both parents and children, what is evident is that there are a lot more open conversations and disclosures between them," Melanie Duca, Asia Pacific consumer marketing director, Intel Security, said.

"While there are open conversations, work is required on ensuring that these go beyond casual chats. It is imperative to focus on ensuring children understand the consequences of their actions as well as agree on good Internet etiquette," she added.

According to the study, the most discussed topics between parents and children are cyber criminals and identity theft (71 percent), privacy settings (62 percent), cyberbullying (57 percent), online reputation (53 percent) or popularity among friends (52 percent).

Additionally, a surprisingly low number (17 percent) of parents are interested in finding out if their children are interacting with strangers online.

"This indicates that while parents believe that interacting with strangers online may be risky, this knowledge has not translated into remedial action," the study said.

News Instagram Update : Instagram Will Allow ‘Search’ For Web Users

In 2013, Instagram moved from an app-only platform to a full-feed experience for web users. Through the years, they have made many intricate changes to the service. Now, Instagram has added the Search tool to Instagram for web via which users can now browse accounts, search for hashtags, locations, and user accounts right from the desktop. The search box is displayed in the middle of the header at the top of the page.
“Web search is part of a broader commitment to improving discovery across our platforms,” an Instagram spokesperson told Forbes. “With 70 million photos shared to Instagram each day, if something is happening in the world, it’s likely being captured on Instagram.”

In the past, Instagram introduced a new web design for the desktop as well as for mobile. According to a report by The Verge, the new web design will now display three large images in each row, as opposed to the five smaller images it displays at the moment on a profile page on the desktop. The collage on top of the bio is removed as well. The report points out that the grid of cover images is now at the top and Instagram has also opted out with most of the borders and rounded edges and will go with circular profile pictures.
The redesign of Instagram for the web looks similar to profile pages in its mobile app. In addition, the user’s profile pictures, posts, followers and following on the web version are in the same style as on the mobile. The new layout will be present on hashtag pages as well and similar design updates will be present on the desktop feed and mobile profiles too.

Web News : New Linux Foundation's Guide To The Open-Source Cloud

Description :A little confused about what's what with Cloud Foundry, OpenStack and Mesos? Let the Linux Foundation help you with its new guide to open-source cloud technologies.

I make my living from riding technology's bleeding edge. In particular I keep an eye on what's what with Linux and open-source software, but even I have trouble keeping track of what's going on with the open-source cloud technologies. Which is why I'm happy to welcome The Linux Foundation's 2015 report: Guide to the Open Cloud: Open Cloud Projects Profiled, which will be released on January 20th.

According to the Foundation, "The purpose of this guide is to serve as a starting point for users considering which projects to use in building and deploying their own open clouds. Taking a deeper look into cloud infrastructure, the paper includes storage, provisioning and platform projects. New categories outline emerging cloud operating systems, Software-defined Networking (SDN), and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) technologies"

In a statement, Amanda McPherson, The Linux Foundation's CMO said, "Our new 'Guide To the Open Cloud" is a helpful primer for any organization beginning a migration to the cloud or moving toward web-scale IT. Open source and collaboration are clearly advancing the cloud faster than ever before. Just consider the many OpenStack distributions and ecosystem emerging around Linux containers that didn't even exist a year ago. Yet, as the open-source cloud evolves so quickly, it can sometimes be difficult for enterprises to identify the technologies that best fit their needs."

This is a follow-up to the Foundation's October 2013 cloud guide. Much has changed since then. For example, Docker, the most popular open-source container technology, was barely known then.

This guide, according to its introduction, "is to serve as a starting point for users considering which projects to use in building and deploying their own open clouds." It is not a comprehensive overview of all cloud-related, open-source software. Instead, it's a curated listing of those open cloud projects that the Foundation believes "will continue to drive innovation in enterprise IT in the coming year."

The projects that made the cut have superior relevance to the open cloud, maturity and visibility. In particular, open-source programs that have a large number of contributors, code commits, and are already starting to be used in the enterprise were picked for this listing.

In short, if you're serious about using an open-source cloud, these are the programs that you should seriously consider using.

Web News : Google Inc Is In Talks To Purchase Mobile Payment Company SoftCard

Reports suggest that Google is interested in taking over mobile payment service, SoftCard, and a $100 million deal might be on the cards.

SoftCard, previously known as ISIS, was forced to change its name after a militant group known as "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” started making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Softcard is a joint venture between AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and T-Mobile US Inc. The mobile wallet has Windows and Android smartphone compatibility, and allows users to make payments through various payment terminal.

Google Inc and SoftCard have refused to comment on a possible deal.
"We don't have a comment, background, deep background, off-the-record steer, nod, wink or any other verbal or nonverbal response to these sorts of rumors," said a Google spokesperson.

At present, SoftCard is accepted by more than 200,000 merchants in the US, including big names like Subway and McDonald's. The service is backed by American Express Company, Wells Fargo & Co, and several other financial institutions in the market.
Google currently has its own mobile payment system called Google Wallet, which was one of the first mobile payment option in the retail market. However, the Google Wallet has failed to gain much traction.

The wireless carrier owned SoftCard hasn’t fared better. Reports suggest that SoftCard axed 60 jobs last week, and at one point the company’s burn rate was approximately $15 million a month, or half a million dollars per day. Morale in the company is at an all time low.

“SoftCard is taking steps to reduce costs and strengthen its business. This includes simplifying the company’s organizational structure and consolidating all operations into its Dallas and New York offices, which involves layoffs across the company,” said a SoftCard spokesperson
.
Apple Inc.'s Apple Pay - mobile payment service for iPhone users – has had better success, with reports suggesting that one million credit card users utilized this service within 72 hours of the service’s launch in October 2014. This surge has also benefited SoftCard, with a greater number utilizing the service.
It looks like Google is also looking to capture a larger share of the mobile payment sector. The tech giant may also be eyeing SoftCard’s group of patents, which are a little over 120. With the acquisition, Google will be looking to expand its roots, and add new merchants to its mobile payment service.

News : WhatsApp Plus Reportedly Coming To The Market Bringing An Improved Experience

Between WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook Messenger, there aren’t many other popular messaging apps, and pretty much all users are running one of the big three. WhatsApp in particular rose to fame with its minimalistic and clean approach to its chat interface, as opposed to Viber and Messenger which allow their users to send “stickers” – a feature that some have been enjoying a lot, while others have been finding profoundly annoying. And now, WhatsApp is evolving, as the app is reportedly about to get an entirely new version called WhatsApp Plus, offering various new features that the original doesn’t have.

One of the things that WhatsApp Plus is going to give its users is more customization – the app itself is going to be much more flexible, with all-new themes, while chats will now offer a wider selection of emoticons to allow users to better express themselves. With regards to themes, it’s reported that the feature is going to be quite extensive, going beyond the simple wallpapers that were featured in the original WhatsApp – the new theme system will reportedly be used to change the entire look and feel of the interface, and will come with hundreds of pre-made themes for users to pick from.

The app will also see a shift towards a more secure-oriented development approach, with more privacy options, including the ability to hide one’s online status. Just like with the “seen” notification setting though, users who choose to disable their online status showing will also not be able to see the online status of others in their contacts list.

Last but definitely not least, if the reports are true, the new WhatsApp Plus is also going to introduce one feature that users have been requesting for a long time – the ability to share large files. It’s not known if there will be any limitations on filesize, although anything would be an improvement over the current situation for sure. With this change alone, WhatsApp can easily become an even more popular platform than it already is, as it can turn into a much more attractive ground for users who enjoy sharing large videos and music files.

No release date or other launch details have been announced for WhatsApp Plus as of yet, and it’s not known if the app will be paid, free, or follow a similar model like the current version that offers a one-year trial on some platforms. Some reports have claimed that WhatsApp Plus will come as a free upgrade to all users of the current version, though nothing has been mentioned about those who’re just about to get into the app for the first time, or those who want to change their numbers.
