News Update On Sony New Handset : Xperia Z5 And The Curious Case Of Sony's Flagship Phones

Could Sony make a comeback with fingerprint scanners, great cameras and a 4K phablet at IFA next week?

Sony's last flagship was the Xperia Z3 and their next is expected to be the Z5. This is because the Z4 was only released in Japan and was also called the Z3+ (pictured). Confused? You're not alone. Photo: Sony
Rumours and speculation have been bubbling for months online about the new phones Sony is expected to unveil in September, although if you've only been paying to the mainstream zeitgeist you'd be forgiven for thinking the Japanese company had stopped making phones entirely.

After a big splash with the waterproof, two-day-battery-toting Xperia Z2 in early 2014, Sony refined and improved its design with the Z3, set a high bar for small phones with the powerful Z3 Compact, and in the year since has struggled to hold the attention of the masses with its erratic release schedule and obtuse naming conventions.

An Xperia Z4 released in Japan was so similar to the Z3 that Sony didn't dare bring it to any other shores (in some regions it was later released as the Z3+). Australia in particular has seen a confusing bevy of new phones announced from the selfie-focused C3, C4 and striking phablet C5 Ultra to the budget E4 and the waterproof M4 and M5.

Next week at the IFA conference in Berlin, so say the rumours, Sony will return to the Z line and attempt to claw back some mindshare with a device packed with latest in Sony-made screen and camera tech, the newest Android software, impressive specs and a now ubiquitous fingerprint sensor. It's widely assumed to be called the Xperia Z5.
Familiar design, new features

Earlier this month a series of images from Twitter user "ViziLeaks" appeared to show an Xperia Z5 and the smaller Z5 Compact. The phones in the pictures follow the flat, monolithic glass 'omnibalance' design seen on all Z devices to date, although both appear to feature the kind of grippy edges and padded corners seen on the Z3 Compact.

The images show regular micro USB ports as opposed to the previously rumoured USB C, but confirm another rumour: that the Z5 devices will come with a built-in fingerprint scanner. Unlike that found on Apple and Samsung devices, Sony's supposed scanner is mounted on the side of the device, doubling as the power button. You can see the long, white scanner in the tweets below.

Mobile photography fans will be pleased to see that the devices retain the hardware shutter button for snapping steady pics without needing to touch the screen.

Go big or go home :

To date, the only big screen Z series phone was released in July 2013. Even risk-averse Apple fully committed to the phablet craze with the iPhone 6 Plus, but Sony's kept the bigger phones for its lesser product lines, like the media-focused T and selfie-focused M.

That could all change next week, with bloggers uncovering a user agent profile for a supersized Z5 (which means someone somewhere is using the phone to access websites) indicating some cutting edge specs, chief among them a 4K resolution screen.

The current high bar for phone screens is Quad HD, and while the two standards are frequently confused, 4K actually has a much higher pixel count (3840 x 2160, as opposed to Quad HD which is 2560 x 1440).

Assuming the Z5 phablet has a screen of 5.5 inches, a 4K screen would give it an astonishing pixel density of 801 pixels per inch (PPI). For comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus has an identically-sized screen and a pixel density of 401 PPI.

Sony was one of the first companies to champion the format for televisions, so it's believable it could bring its software and expertise to help it shine on a phone. It remains to be seen whether a 4K resolution on a screen so small would offer any advantage over Quad HD, but it's certainly a talking point.

Some sites have supposed the Z5 phablet to be called the "Xperia Z5 Plus", but given it already used 'plus' in an attempt to cover up its Z4 blunder, I think this would be too confusing even for Sony. "Z5 Ultra" seems more likely. Images apparently leaked from an internal slideshow seem to confirm the existence of the phablet.

A focus on the camera:

As with its fancy screen technology, cameras are an area you expect Sony to be on top of. After all, this is a company that not only makes sensors for its own high-end cameras, but also for its smartphone competitors at Apple and Samsung.

Despite this, the camera hardware on Z phones has been identical since the Z2. It seems a big change is coming in terms of imaging, and this tidbit is actually from Sony itself, or at least one of its European bureaus:
he shape and size of the phone in the picture makes it unlikely this is a flagship Xperia Z5, although it could easily be the Z5 Compact (or, if Sony hasn't learnt its lesson, something completely different).

There are countless other bits and pieces that point to what Sony could be cooking up (for example it launched a quiet test of a new "stripped back" Android skin in July, could it be looking to ditch the bloatware?), but the most convincing rumours point to a trio of high-end phones that update the Z3 in predictable but powerful ways.

The landmark in the teaser image above is the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, and the date points to a couple of days before IFA gets underway in that city, so it's clear we don't have long to wait to find out if Sony has the goods to get it back out of the shadows.

News Sony New Handset Update: Bezel-Free Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 Leak In New High Definition Images Available

Sony is scheduled to announce the new Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 in the next couple of days. Prior to that announcement, newly leaked images were spotted online, giving us early glimpses of the handsets' design features.
The leak comes from the Russian tech site Hi.Tech.Mail.ru. The original post, according to 9to5google.com, was time stamped for Aug. 3 and had now been taken down.

The upcoming C5 Ultra, as the name suggests, is billed as the successor to the 5.5-inch Xperia C4. The "ultra" moniker could refer to a number of things. First among them is the C5 Ultra's bigger display of 6 inches compared to the C4's. The next thing to consider is its upgraded battery size of 2,930 mAh which is bigger than the C4's 2,600 mAh battery. Other major comparisons include the C5 Ultra's 13MP wide-angle front-facing camera versus the C4's 5MP and the C5 Ultra's ultra-thin 0.8 mm bezel versus the C4's bezel measurement of 2.2 mm.

A few days ago, Tech Times reported on a leaked manual of the Xperia C5 Ultra, which confirms the handset's bezel-free display. The report also noted the handset's rear and front cameras to both have a flash.

The second image in question is purported to be the Xperia M5, which is reminiscent of the Sony Xperia Z3. Unlike the huge C5 Ultra, the M5 exudes a certain level of familiarity that makes it blend easily with the other Sony devices that are now available on the market.

The Xperia M5 features a 5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display and also sports a 13MP camera on the front and rear. It runs an octa-core Media Tek Helio X10 processor and has a RAM of 3GB, internal storage of 16GB and a microSD slot. It also boasts an IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance certification.

Among the two, the Xperia C5 Ultra will probably get more attention because of its bigger display and the 0.8mm wide bezels. Other notable features include a RAM of 2GB, internal storage of 16GB and an octa-core Media Tek Mt6752 processor.

The Xperia C5 Ultra is expected to retail at around $350 while the Xperia M5 will be somewhere near the $400 price point.

As we have heard before, the new firmware for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop was recently certified in the PTCRB, so we can assume that a main update will come for these two phones, the Xperia Z2 and Z3 Sony Xperia , throughout this week. Sony wanted to confirm our suspicions and stated that both devices Xperia receive Android 5.1.1 Lollipop late July.
This information comes from the hand of XperiaBlog , which claim that Sony Japan has also revealed some changes included in the update to Android 4.4.4 Android 5.1.1 KitKat Lollipop. However, if you are owners of Xperia Android 5.0. 2 Lollipop , those changes will not be implemented in this update to Android 5.1.1 since they were already present on your device.

Two confirmed changes :

So far, only two developments have confirmed the previously rumored and will form part of the upgrade. It is a wider range of options for the Wi-Fi connection and Bluetooth in the menu of notifications and new icons that appear in the menu settings.

Obviously, these are not the only changes that will appear with the update; we also expect bug fixes, new animations and latest technology enhancements to be included in our devices for increased performance.

Sony is one of the leading manufacturers of smartphones, devices that bring Android to the most popular and you’re doing get Android 5.1.1 Lollipop almost all terminals. It is not the only company: HTC, Motorola and Samsung have done the same with their latest models; but manufacturers still need to follow these steps.

News Android L Update : Android L 5.1.1 Update For Sony Xperia Z2, Z3 Devices Arriving Soon

Owners of devices from Xperia's Z2 and Z3 lines of handsets can expect to receive the latest version of the Android Lollipop soon.

According to various sources, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series has just been certified, the Xperia Blog reported.

The certification for the update was granted by PTCRB, an organization that authorizes telecommunication bands used by devices in North America.

However, this does not automatically mean that the update will be seeded to devices right away. Sony will still have to conduct various tests on the update before it is rolled out to the public.
The devices that will receive the update include the Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 Dual, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. As for their series model numbers, these are the Xperia Z2 D6502, Xperia D6503, Xperia Z2 Tablet SGP521.

For the Z3 series, these include the Xperia Z3 D6653, Z3 Dual D6633, Z3 Compact D5803 and D5B33 and the Z3 Tablet Compact SGP621 and SGP641.

Android Geeks noted that the update can only be installed for devices running on stock software. Those with modified firmware will not be able to get the latest Android Lollipop update.

As for its features, the update comes with various improvements and enhancements designed to improve the overall performance of the devices. Through the update, bug and glitches that causes apps to crash and freeze will be eliminated. It will also fix the issue that causes the devices to restart randomly, according to Android Standard.

In addition, the update will also improve the battery life of devices as well as prevent overheating.

However, it is not yet confirmed if the latest OS upgrade will be able to fix the memory leak issue. According to reports, this problem involves increased RAM usage even though users are not running apps on their devices.

The additional features of the update, on the other hand, include improved notifications setting, multi-user support and better security system.

Although Sony has not yet announced when the update will be exactly rolled out for the Z2 and Z3 series, users can expect to receive it within the next few weeks.

Once the update goes live, users will receive notifications regarding its availability. However, the roll out will most probably conducted in stages to ensure that the update is free of bugs and other potential problems. This means not everyone will be able to get it at the same time once it is officially released.

News Handset Security Update : My Xperia Theft Protection Bricking Phones With Unlocked Bootloaders

Sony's My Xperia Theft Protection (MXTP) feature, which is present in recently launched handsets such as Sony Xperia Z3+, Xperia C4, Xperia Z4 Tablet and Xperia M4 Aqua, is bricking bootloader-unlocked smartphones as per user reports.

For those unaware, the MXTP security feature, when enabled, prevents a user from wiping the stolen Xperia device and installing a custom ROM without access to the owner's Google sign-in details. The main work done by MXTP here is to prevent the bootloader on the device from unlocking.
However, according to some Xperia users (via Xperia Blog), enabling the MXTP on the device that already has an unlocked bootloader, leads to the bricking of the smartphone. This is said to happen due to MXTP's efforts to prevent the bootloader-unlocking on an Xperia handset that already has an unlocked bootloader.

Sony is aware of the issue and instead of a solution, has recently changed some wording on its Unlocked Bootloader website under the 'Risks' section. The firm says that, "After unlocking your device, you should not enable My Xperia (found in the settings menu under security on some devices running Android 5.0) as this might cause the device to malfunction." The site adds, "In addition, if you have enabled My Xperia, this function must be turned off before you can unlock your device."

Notably, Sony for now does not allow consumers to unlock the bootloader on new devices including Sony Xperia Z3+, Xperia C4, Xperia Z4 Tablet and Xperia M4 Aqua. The delay is said to be the same MXTP issue, which the firm might be working on behind-the-scenes. For now, there are no custom ROMs available for the devices.
