Microsoft's IE 10 For Windows 8 And Windows Phone 8: What's Different

Summary: Microsoft is syncing delivery of its mobile IE and PC Internet Explorer browsers. There's a lot the two have in common. But some things are still different.

Given Windows Phone 8 now runs on a Windows NT kernel, are the two IE10 browsers (mobile and PC) identical, feature-wise? The answer is not 100 percent, according to a November 8 "Developing for Windows Phone" blog post.

  • Inline video
  • Some of the new manipulation views APIs (application programming interfaces) for touch panning and zooming, with the exception of –ms-touch-action
  • Multi-track HTML5 audio (simultaneous)
  • ActiveX and VBScript
  • Drag-and-drop APIs
  • File access APIs with the exception of blobs which are supported on Windows Phone 8
  • Windows 8 integration features: Link previews, pinned site icons & notifications and support for connecting sites to apps
  • Also in Internet Explorer 10 for Windows Phone, Window.open does not return a valid window object. This is because on the phone each “window” is isolated in its own sandbox.
Up until the other day, when Ms finally combined out the public edition of the Ms windows 8 software growth kit, Ms authorities were suggesting Ms windows Cellphone designers to use IE10 to do early examining of their websites for user interface. With the SDK, designers now can use the included emulator to test their websites directly on Ms windows Cellphone 8.

One of Windows information at its Develop designer meeting the other day was that "HTML5 is coming to Ms windows Cellphone in a BIG way," as the weblog post's writer Program Administrator Jorge Peraza determined.

But the reality is a little more complicated, as Shawn Wildermuth, a Ms Most Valuable Professional, writer of a number of growth and Ms windows Cellphone books mentioned in a recent writing of his own.

"The big benefit of Ms windows Cellphone 8's ability to create HTML5/JS program isn't in the SDK...it's in the managing system: IE10. IE10 is a much more complete web browser and includes support for key features that made mobile phone programs and site difficult such as Tight Method and Touch APIs. With that amended, HTML5 programs on the foundation are indeed easier to develop and better than before, but they are not Ms windows 8 JavaScript programs running on the telephone."

Wildermuth said the addition of a built-in design for HTML5 phone program indicates designers can now write Ms windows 8-style JavaScript programs, but that this isn't true. More value can be distributed between Ms windows Cellphone 8 HTML5 programs and WIndows 8 JavaScript programs, but user-interface value cannot, Wildermuth highlighted.
