AVM Fritz!Box 3370: First Take

Summary: The Fritz!Box 3370 broadband router will appeal to those who don't need AVM's customary VoIP and DECT telephony features, but it's on the pricey side.

AVM has been on a bit of a quinton jackson this season, releasing several new designs in the Fritz!Box variety of wi-fi routers. Its newest providing, the Fritz!Box 3370, does away with all the VoIP telephone functions that the In german organization is well-known for, but contributes a 3x3 802.11n stations to provide wi-fi weblink rates of rate up to 450Mbps. It's a single-radio, dual-band design (using an Atheros AR9380 chip), so can only function on one regularity at once, but it facilitates 3-stream MIMO function at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

The Fritz!Box 3370 uses the acquainted low-profile framework seen used in all the present designs, but does not have the regular cellphone slots at the returning. There's just the VDSL/ADSL relationship, four Gigabit Ethernet slots and a USB 2.0 slot (there's another at the side). The LAN slots assistance an automated power-saving method, but this basically decreases their rate to 100Mbps. As with all designs, the ADSL computer can be impaired and one LAN slot can be designed as a WAN slot if required.

It uses the newest Fritz!OS firmware, which is typical across the variety, although all the telephone functions are losing. It still has a DLNA press hosting server and assistance for the no cost MyFritz distant control support. A 3G USB dongle can be linked with the USB slot for automated failover assistance for the main WAN relationship.

We ran our regular performance assessments, using the newest edition of Passmark Programs Performance Check and a 3x3 Apple 5300AGN adaptor. At 2.4GHz it came returning a typical throughput of 34Mbps at 1m and 16Mbps at 25m, while on the 5GHz group it obtained 48Mbps at near variety and just 14Mbps at 25m. These numbers aren't particularly amazing for a 3-stream system, although the long-range outcomes signify about a 50 % enhancement on the 2-stream Fritz!Box designs we've seen, such as the 7330, 7360 and 7390.

The Fritz!Box 3370 — which expenses £125 (ex. VAT), or €179 — will entice those who don't need VoIP or DECT performance, but are drawn by the easy-to-use firmware and lengthy lifecycle assistance of the Fritz!Box variety. It's costly in comparison to other similarly-featured wi-fi routers, however.
