Battlefield 4 Will Be In Modern-Day Setting

Battlefield 3 by Electronic Arts (EA) was one of the best selling games of 2011. The game was in direct competition with Activision’s behemoth Modern Warfare 3, though the latter experienced better sales. During Game Developers Conference Europe, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson revealed that Battlefield 4, the sequel to Battlefield 3, will stay in the modern era setting, according to Joystiq.

"There's a lot of things inspiring us as to how the franchise will move on. Everything from fans' feedback, to market research and, of course, what we want to build ourselves. It's not just one single thing," said Troedsson. "And, yes, I know Battlefield 4 is probably the most creative name we ever could come up with. I can't comment any more on that game because it's all secret," he added on a funny side note.

Battlefield 4, may ship between April 2013 and March 2014, according to an earlier report. EA’s Frank Gibeau made the projections about the release date of the game during an earnings call call, where EA expressed excitement about the future of the Battlefield and Medal of Honor franchises.

EA didn’t say much about Battlefield 4 apart from the projection of the release date. The company seems much more focused on their upcoming first person shooter, Medal of Honor: Warfighter. "Our goal with Medal of Honor was to change things up a bit. We changed the tech-base from the Unreal Engine to the Frostbite engine. We added some resources from our DICE studio in Stockholm, and we've tried some very innovative things this time around with multiplayer".

Most of the sales of Medal of Honor: Warfighter will probably come from the possibility of getting early access to the Battlefield 4 beta, when it is released in 2013. Analysts recently lowered the forecasts for sales of Medal of Honor: Warfighter, due to how bad the reboot released in 2010 was.

This wouldn’t be the first time a company has tried to sell a game by bundling it with the demo of another game. During the PlayStation 2 era, Konami shipped the demo for the massively anticipated Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty with the game Zone of the Enders that sold very well despite being an average game because of the demo for Metal Gear Solid 2.

There is little information about Battlefield 4 yet except for the setting, but Medal of Honor: Warfighter will be made using DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 engine, the same engine fuelling Battlefield 3. Medal of Honor’s multiplayer, which was designed by DICE, will now be developed in-house by Danger Close.

EA has released a small trailer that displays the badassery of Tier 1, the hardcore operatives you’ll be playing as through the campaign of Warfighter. During a keynote at the University of Southern California, president of Electronic Arts, Frank Gibeau said, “There is going to be a Battlefield 4".
