Summary: Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt expects Microsoft to move 3 million Surface units in 2012 and 9 million in 2013.
Ms windows Area product is more than just some side project to push associates to design better components. The Area is Ms windows biggest and best protect against a declining PC industry.
How good of a protect the Area becomes remains to be seen. However, experts are anticipating the Area to at least offset what could be weak PC revenue.
For instance, Morgan Stanley specialist Adam Holt desires Ms to move 3 thousand Area units this year and 9 thousand in 2013.
Holt said in a research note:
Win 8 /Win RT is Microsoft’s first serious effort in the product industry and we are very carefully positive that the tablet-oriented OS, Workplace incorporation, and enterprise-friendly features will help Ms gain share in the product and hybrid market—which will still be step-by-step to agreement reports, and possibly the multiple. Our survey in May 2012 of 7,500 customers suggested that 25% of customers expect to buy a Ms windows product at any cost and 30% would buy a Ms windows product at equality with an iPad. While Apple has said it desires over 20 Win 8 product designs depending on its structure, recent news suggests that the release of x86-based Win 8 pills will be late...Surface is promising, with its innovative Touch Cover keyboard, light covering, USB ports and Workplace but submission and consumer adopting is still largely a outrageous card.
Despite those outrageous cards, Holt is anticipating Ms windows Area along with an army of product associates can give it 14 % of the product industry in 2013, up from 4 % this year.
Holt is also betting that Area total edges will be 9 percent.
Those total edges may be a bit risky. Why? Ms windows product gains will almost solely ride on the Area because components associates are costs high on Ms windows 8 devices.
ThinkEquity specialist Yun Kim said that enterprises want to go with Ms windows mobile platform, but cost will matter to Area revenue. Kim said:
Given that all OEM versions of Ms windows RT-based pills are cost well above $500, we believe initial success of Ms windows RT will be determined by the costs of Ms windows Windows RT-based Area product. In our view, MSFT is facing a costs dilemma with its Area product. We are maintaining our dissertation that cheaper Area product could result in revenue development materially lagging device development, while more expensive Area could see poor device revenue.
Bottom line: The Ms windows 8 launch will be critical, but all eyes should be watching Area revenue.
