Lenovo Acquires Brazilian Consumer Electronics Firm Digibras

Summary: Lenovo looks to get a stronger foothold in Latin America with the purchase of Digibras in Brazil.

Lenovo is expanding its presence in Brazil with the acquisition of local consumer electronics firm Digibras.

The Chinese PC maker is paying approximatley $147 million for the entire company, which manufacturers CCE-brand personal computers, phones and television across seven factories in Brazil.

Even though Lenovo is already the world's second largest PC vendor, according to recent IDC figures, that doesn't mean it can rest easy. Building out the business in Latin America could be what it needs to jump to number one.

Being that Brazil is one of the world's top PC markets now, it is imperative for Lenovo to make a move and make a strong foothold in Latin America now.

The Wall Street Journal added that the merger could help Lenovo also make a bigger push in the smarpthone, tablet and TV markets with this deal.

Just a few months ago, Lenovo's Asia-Pacific and Latin America president, Milko Van Duijl, told Dow Jones that it was looking to set up a permanent location in Brazil in a bid to lower import costs and produce PCs locally.
