Summary: Microsoft has provided yet
another update to its Windows Embedded roadmap. Many products have been
renamed. And a new version of Embedded Handheld is coming.
In Goal, when Windows Ms windows Included group shared its cross-product map, there were lots of refers to of "Windows Next" and not a lot of tangible delivery schedules.
On Nov 13, the group fleshed out that map with more tangible schedules, as well as acknowledgements that Ms windows 8 will be at the primary across most, but not quite all, of its embedded operating-system line.
TThe "not quite all" warning has to do with Embeded Portable. In fact, the most interesting upgrade to this week's map was Windows promise that new edition of Ms windows Included Portable is arriving. Ms hasn't released a new edition of its ruggedized os, since it delivered Ms windows Included Portable 6.5 (based on the Ms windows Cellular 6.5 core) in September 2010.
The initially guaranteed Ms windows Included Portable 7 item was supposed to be depending on Ms windows Included Lightweight 7 and was scheduled to deliver by the end of 2011. According to the new map, that plan has changed. Ms windows Included 8 Portable -- about which "more details will be available in beginning 2013" -- is going to be depending on Ms windows Cellphone 8 technology, says Windows new news launch. This is a item for the ruggedized/enterprise handheld device market.
What else is on the roadmap?
Windows Included 8 Standard, which is depending on the Ms windows 8 primary code. The discharge review available now; common accessibility is scheduled for Goal 2013.
Windows Included 8 Pro, which also is depending on the Ms windows 8 primary. This is the new name for the item formerly known as Ms windows Included 8 Business. General accessibility is scheduled for Goal 2013.
Windows Included 8 Industry is the relabeled Ms windows Included POSReady (with POS standing for point of sale). There will be both a community technology review test build and details on moment arriving in Jan 2013.
Windows Included Lightweight 2013 is the new name for the item that until now seemed intended to be known as Ms windows Included 8 Lightweight. Ms is recognizing openly that it will be generally available in the second one fourth of 2013. (Recently, Ms authorities indicated the arriving Included Lightweight launch would deliver in the first one fourth of 2013, a slip from the previous "latter half of 2012" deliver target. So it seems it has fallen a bit again.)
Windows Included 8 Automobile. Windows not saying much on this beyond "more details will be available in beginning 2013." Ms is working with "preselected partners" on this item, which will "be depending on Ms windows 8 technology."
Until Ms windows Cellphone 8, Ms had used Ms windows Included Lightweight (and its forerunner Ms windows CE) as the primary for its mobile operating-system foundation. With Ms windows Cellphone 8, Ms decreased Included Lightweight and changed it with the Ms windows NT primary.
